The Women Student Union fosters the growth of women personally, professionally and politically. The WSU will celebrate the power existing within every woman to promote self-autonomy, denounce all limitations, educate on systems of oppression and advocate inclusivity within a diverse community. WSU facilitates a network among organizations, departments and services to embrace, engage and empower.
Since the inception of Florida State College of Women in 1905, students have led many protests and activism campaigns for racial and women’s rights issues. Due to this surge in social awareness, FSU was nicknamed the “Berkeley of the South.” The Women Educational and Cultural Center however, was not recognized as a student organization until 1974 when it formally changed its name to the Women’s Center. The organization operated under this name for over thirty years providing resources for women on campus including childcare, programming, advocacy and support.
The Women Student Union, officially established in 2012, is an identity-based group within Student Government whose overall mission is to unite women on the common purpose of individual self-growth and empowerment. WSU places emphasis on addressing the issues collegiate women face and providing the forum in which they can be enlightened and empowered. As the representative voice of women, 56% of the student population, the Women Student Union places significant importance on encompassing the various types of womanhood that exist. The logo of the Women Student Union therefore signifies diversification of women, allowing for the inclusion of all identity groups that encompass womanhood.
